Wordle was invented during the coronavirus lockdown by Josh Wardle, a New York-based software developer who simply wanted a game “for me and my partner to enjoy.”

Upon release in October 2021, Wordle quickly gained a dedicated online fan base and in January 2022 the game was purchased by the New York Timesalthough it is still free to play for users.

Erhan Aslan, who teaches Applied Linguistics at the University of Reading in the UK, shared some tips for playing Wordle during an interview with news week.

He said: “One thing I think is important in this game is the seed word chosen. Start with words that contain commonly used vowels (e.g. e and a), consonants (e.g. r and t) and tone sequences Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j or x, for example, is easy may not be the best choice.

“If you get more feedback after a few guesses, users will have to resort to some knowledge of phonetics to narrow down or eliminate some words they might be thinking,” Aslan added. “For example, if the second letter of the target word is l (marked in green) and the player feels that the word begins with a consonant, he needs to know that there are few consonant cluster possibilities (such as bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl).”
