Highlights of The Hundred where Northern Superchargers beat Manchester Originals by six wickets

Manchester Originals captain Jos Buttler’s fifty was in vain as Harry Brook and Adam Lyth helped Northern Superchargers to a six-wicket win in The Hundred…

history of the game

Names may differ, but the Roses’ rivalry remained heated as a Lancashire side (Manchester Originals) took on Yorkshire (Northern Superchargers) in Friday’s game at Emirates Old Trafford.

Originals Skipper Buttler hit 59 from 41 balls, including a six and five fours, before being googly bowled by an Adil Rashid as the hosts carded 161-4, their highest score of the tournament to date.

But that was surpassed by six-ball Superchargers as Lyth (51 of 30) and David Willey (29 of 21) shot before Brook (33 of 19) and David Wiese (15 of 6) took the visitors to 162-4 in 94 deliveries.

  • Manchester Originals 161-4 from 100 balls – Butler (59 of 41), Madsen (43 of 26); Willey (2-24 of 20), Rashid (1-20 of 20)
  • Northern Superchargers 162-4 from 94 balls – Lyth (51 of 30), Brook (33 of 19); Gymnasts (1-7 of 5), Parkinson’s (1-20 of 20)

Brooks’ two sixes ahead of Originals spinner Tom Hartley left Superchargers using just 12 balls from 10, and Wiese soon wrapped things up with a six and then a four ahead of speedy Australia’s Sean Abbott.

Superchargers beat Originals in a closed teams game last season and hit a record 200 hundreds during a riotous night at Headingley and they’ve earned bragging rights here again.

In the Originals’ innings, Buttler was assisted by Wayne Madsen (43 of 26) and late cameos by Andre Russell (29 of 20) and Paul Walter (23 of 10) – Russell and Walter each hit three sixes – while he was carrying the ball for was Superchargers, Rashid conceded just 20 runs from as many balls and Willey took two wickets including Phil Salt for just one.

Rashid’s numbers of 1-20 from 20 balls were equalized by colleague Matt Parkinson in the Superchargers’ chase, the latter catching Willey at depth.

Lyth said: “We talked at half-time about trying to take the power play so it was nice to get a few runs and get over the line for the team at the end. We were very confident with our batting side. It wasn’t that good last year or we were sixth. We can do a lot better this year.

What they said – ‘Brook was caught in the end’

Supercharger Skipper, Faf du Plessis: “It was a really good start for us, I thought [Originals] were about 10 runs over par so it was important for us to get ahead of them on the power play, which I think we did.

“Then the guys stayed at this pace the whole time. There was a really good composure from Brooky at the end [Harry Brook], who is a mature young man. Lyth’s inings were also very good. You need someone to get those fifty innings to give you a chance to win.”

Original Captain, Jos Buttler: “I thought when we put the pressure on them they needed clearance and managed to find it. I feel like maybe the ball slipped a bit more than what we had in our innings, but thanks to the opposition, I thought they managed to take the right risk at the right time.”
