As of this morning, the city had done nothing to fix a broken maintenance shaft that ate a Chinese tourist’s leg in southeast metro Bangkok.

People this morning complained that the only one to take action was a witness to the tourist’s injury, who covered the gaping sidewalk pit outside the Ancient City tourist attraction with a piece of plywood, two traffic cones, and some small, sad flags.

Thanakrit Biphichanon, 52, said he was waiting for friends in the area when he saw six tourists exit a tuk-tuk, likely on their way to the Sukhumvit Road tourist attraction in Samut Prakan province. One of them, a 50-year-old man, stepped into the hungry hole and sustained wounds to his leg and thigh.

Thanakrit went to help, and the man was carried off by his friends.

Thanakrit was among those today demanding the city fix the footpath as it is located at a popular tourist destination.

Poorly maintained roads and sidewalks cause injuries and fatalities every year. Photos of the  sizeable hole were shared on social media, where many took jabs at the government’s priorities.

“A city where people fall into manholes and police diligently set up checkpoints,” one read.
