Camden, NJ- A 28-year-old man who was hospitalized since January when he was shot in Camden has died and the investigation into his fatal shooting continues, reported Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez.

On Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 5:01 p.m., Andrew M. Ayala was pronounced deceased by Dr. Nwotite of Acuity Specialty Hospital of New Jersey in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  He had reportedly been hospitalized since a shooting incident in Camden on January 3, 2022. On Sunday, May 22, 2022, Dr. Peter Mazari conducted an autopsy of Ayala and the cause of death was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds with complications and the manner of death was determined to be homicide.

On Monday, January 3, 2022, at approximately 10:28 p.m., Camden County Metro Police Department officers were dispatched to North 20th Street and Wayne Avenue for a report of an individual shot.  Upon their arrival, officers located Ayala, suffering from a gunshot wound.  Officers transported him to Cooper University Hospital.

This cooperative investigation is ongoing between the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Camden County Metro Police Department.
