“I lost everything,” says Annie Dostie from the start in an interview with Le Journal a month after the tragedy.
On October 16, the mother of two teenagers saw smoke billowing out of her apartment as she entered to use the bathroom.
“I just had time to pull up my pants, run and go out barefoot,” says the 41-year-old.

All of his personal belongings, including his clothes, are covered in soot and are therefore beyond salvage.
No one was injured in the fire that broke out in his room, but the damage to the building was extensive. She will therefore not be able to return to this accommodation.
“Also, my car caught fire. When you lose everything and you don’t have insurance, it’s tough,” says Ms. Dostie.
She was cared for by the Red Cross, who offered her $500 for short-term help. She gave this amount to her 14-year-old twins so that they could buy clothes.
Nothing to save
“He’s covered in soot. There’s not much to save. I washed up so much my fingernails are black,” explains the Magog resident in Eastern Townships.
Since then, Ms. Dostie has not received an additional amount to specifically help her with a move, new car or new clothes.
She currently lives with a friend.
“There is no help at all, you are not supported. It’s sad that the world isn’t helping me anymore,” she laments.
With kind approval
The damage to her apartment is so great that she can no longer return there.
An application has been made to the Compensation for Victims of Crime (IVAC). However, this is still being worked on.
Nicolas Collin, her ex-boyfriend, was charged with arson five days after the crime.
But even after the fire, the man would not have stopped.
Before the police could handcuff him, he would have sneaked around several times a day in front of his friend’s house, who was staying at the time, and even unscrewed the bolts from the wheels of his car.
“I stopped at the supermarket. I was sure I was going to lose a bike, it sounded weird,” she says.

“I never thought he could have done that. It’s crazy,” she sighs.
The Magog resident has also been charged with criminal harassment and mischief at Annie Dostie’s vehicle.
Nicolas Collin met his mother at home in a bar this summer. They then started talking to each other on the internet and then started dating.
But a few weeks later, in early September, he was found guilty of mischief against Annie Dostie.
“He had turned on the air conditioning in my apartment and all my flowerpots: I had tomatoes, peppers, a lemon tree…” the victim recalled.
Released in September
When the defendant was released from prison at the end of September, he attempted to re-establish contact with Ms Dostie, which she refused.
“He was angry because I didn’t want to go back to him. I think it’s because he has it [allumé l’incendie] “, She believes.
- The 32-year-old is currently in custody. He is due to return to Sherbrooke Courthouse on November 30 to continue his post-release investigations.
