LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Another round of Santa Ana winds is approaching Southern California, with gusty conditions expected for Thanksgiving, raising the possibility of planned power outages due to concerns about possible wildfires.

“Due to weather conditions, public safety power shutdowns are being considered for some communities in SoCal,” Southern California Edison said.

A Interactive map of the current outages is available on Edison’s website, along with information about possible upcoming shutdowns.

A high wind warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect through 3 p.m. Thursday in the mountains of Santa Monica and Los Angeles County, as well as Acton and Mount Wilson.

Most areas can expect wind speeds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph.

A wind warning is in effect from Thursday 3:00 p.m. to Friday 11:00 a.m. in the same areas.

North-easterly winds of 20-30mph with gusts of up to 50mph are expected during the wind warning.

“Harmful winds could blow down large objects such as trees and power lines,” the NWS said. “Power outages are possible. Traveling could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”

A fire weather watch will take effect at 1 a.m. Thursday in the same areas affected by the high wind watch and continue through Friday morning. A separate fire weather watch is in place for the Malibu coast Thursday morning through Thursday night.

Forecasters said fire weather surveillance will be triggered by the combination of gusty winds in Santa Ana and humidity levels expected to range between 5% and 15%, meaning particularly dry conditions that may encourage fires.

“This Santa Ana event will take place a little farther east than recent events, resulting in a greater focus on the western San Fernando Valley and western portions of the Santa Monica Mountains,” the NWS said. “…There is a smaller window of critical conditions for the coastal areas along and west of Malibu into Coastal Ventura County, centered on Thursday daytime.”

With a fire weather warning in effect, forecasters urged residents in fire-prone areas to prepare immediately for possible blazes that could force evacuations. The NWS urged residents to visit readyforwildfire.org or wildfirerisk.org for fire preparedness tips.
