Love wins in Quezon City! LGBTQ+ couples can register for a commitment ceremony that the Quezon City government is hosting in February, mayor Joy Belmonte announced on her social media pages.
It is the second time the city is sponsoring the commitment ceremony, the mayor said.
“Quezon City is a gender-fair city where [the] LGBT community is treated with respect and equality,” the post read.
The Office of the Mayor and the city’s Gender and Development Council are sponsoring the event.
Quezon City residents interested in taking part in the ceremony may register in their respective districts’ action offices or “mini city halls”:
- District 1: 176 E. Beltran Street, Barangay Katipunan
- District 2: 2/F Disaster Bldg., Barangay Hall, Barangay Commonwealth
- District 3: 25 Calderon Street, Barangay Marilag
- District 4: Sct. Reyes between Sct. Chuatoco, Barangay Paligsahan
- District 5: Novaliches District Center
- District 6: Sanville Multi-Purpose Hall, Barangay Culiat
While this is certainly a welcome gesture for the LGBTQ+ community in Quezon City, same-sex marriage continues to be illegal in the Philippines. In 2019, the Supreme Court upheld its dismissal of a petition to legalize same-sex marriage in the country, a decision that was made “with finality.”
Huge credit to Quezon City for being the only one in the Philippines to host an LGBTQ+ commitment event of this magnitude. We hope others follow their enlightened example.
