I saw a social media post a few years ago of fit actress Kate Bosworth working out with a ball between her legs. Despite a throwback to Suzanne Somers’ Thigh Master moment, the novelty stuck in my head, but a few years forward and I, too, have a ball between my legs. As it turns out, the ball is a proprietary fitness device from P.volve, the P.ball. P.volve workouts are unlike anything I’ve ever done — and that’s saying a lot considering I’ve been exercising my entire adult life (as opposed to my vices). P.volve’s exercises focus on “functional movement” as opposed to traditional exercises, meaning the workouts are designed to strengthen your body in ways that you do yourself Strictly speaking use it in everyday life. It’s a revelation and a relief to stop doing lunges and other traditional exercises and learn a low-impact method to strengthen my entire body.

The beginner workouts can be challenging even for a fit person as they involve learning a new approach to training. This learning curve was intimidating but ultimately fun. There are some familiar moves in the mix, like planks, but with add-ons to make it all even better. The workouts are continuous, so even 20 or 30 minutes can be intense – perfect for maximizing free time during the day (rather than using the old “no time” excuse!).

Among the most challenging moves is standing on one leg — which is deceptively difficult, but engages your core in a whole new way. As my favorite trainer Antonietta says, we think of our core as our abs—but actually, so are our back and glutes. This body strengthening prevents injuries and supports us in everyday life, which was also a big departure. Now, months after doing P.volve, I’m noticing a big difference in how my body moves and how much strength I find in everyday tasks – especially turning or balancing.

P.volve devices can be bought individually or in kits, although kits come with a three-month subscription that you need to get started. P.volve trainers are all fantastic, but Chief Training Officer Antonietta Vicario’s guidance is particularly helpful to me as I continue to learn. Pictured here with a P.3 trainer, she has several videos in the Getting Started section for beginners.

The workouts are grouped into series: for beginners (an ideal place to learn the new moves), wellness for women, progressive strength training, meditation, stretching and more. You’ll find yourself doing exercises while rotating your hips and spine in and out, which in itself was life-changing. The pain I used to have in my hips and shoulders is reduced, and my balance and core strength have improved so much that I feel it every day, like getting dressed, shaving my legs, or taking out the garbage. Although P.volve is for everyone, specific workouts address issues unique to women. For example, women between the ages of 35 and 50 typically suffer from hormonal imbalances, and there are workouts that cater to our cycle, menopause, and pelvic floor strengthening.

P.volve gear is specifically designed to complement this updated style of training, although there are some recognizable parts like ankle and hand weights. The Essentials Kit covers the basics and even includes a three-month subscription, personal trainer consultation and access to the live streaming series. The pieces I also consider essential are the Precision Mat, which helps you assess whether you’re positioning your feet correctly when watching instructors, and the P.mat, which is the perfect size and is the only mat I have ever used that my knees didn’t have. It doesn’t hurt when kneeling. It was also important to have both 2 pound hand weights and heavier ones (I already had 6 pound dumbbells). I’m currently eyeing the Slant Board as my gear collection grows as it all fits in one basket and doesn’t take up much space.

I also use the P.volve massagers including the foam roller (it’s the best I’ve ever used) and those weird little massage balls I scooped up at the last minute while checking out which are unexpectedly amazing – at least two friends, who tried mine asked me to get them the massage balls too.

The Essentials Kit is a five-piece set perfect for getting started. The brand also offers a cost-saving Total Transformation Kit if you want to dive in with 11 pieces of equipment to add more variety to your workout. Each workout lists what equipment is needed for each so you know before you begin.

I’m grateful to have the massagers after my first live streaming class. Using the P.volve system on-demand has enabled me to progress in fitness at my own pace, but the live training has been a next-level challenge for which I am grateful. The instructor was motivating and fun to train with, which inspired me to get through the entire workout – and yes, I had my camera on. It was the best I’ve slept in months, but I was Pain the next day – in a good way.

Additional virtual personal training sessions can be purchased for those who need additional help or motivation. If you travel often, P.volve also has a free app and live studios. With the variety of workouts P.volve offers, you can get started in the comfort of your own home, regardless of your fitness level, and membership pricing is very competitive at just $150 per year.

There is no better investment than in your own health and strength, and we have to start somewhere to make it pay off.

Don’t let obstacles stand in your way!

I look forward to seeing what’s next from P.volve and if I can take the challenge to heart (spoilers: I can because building confidence in body and mind will take you anywhere). Hank not included!
