A woman from suburban Portland, Oregon, who survived being shot in the face when caught in the middle of a gunfight, appeared before city leaders this week to demand more action against gun violence.

“These wounds you see on my face are the result of a 40-caliber bullet that went right through my nose,” Katie Guzenko told Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and members of the city council on Wednesday, KATU2 reported.

Guzenko, 27, an Amazon HR specialist, was driving near Southeast 130th Avenue and Powell Boulevard in Portland on July 20 to pick up silverware for a bridal shower when she heard gunshots.

“I kept riding, hoping to get out of that area… the next thing I know is my face is bleeding profusely,” Guzenko said in a recent interview with KGW8.

Police said she was caught in the crossfire after two gunmen started shooting at each other across the street during a suspected gang-related confrontation.

One of the gunmen’s bullets pierced the front passenger window of Guzenko’s car, went through her nose and came out the driver’s window.

A grisly video recorded by the shocked victim in the immediate aftermath of the shooting showed much of her face covered in a thick layer of blood oozing from her wounds.

Guzenko was able to stop and jump out of the car to call for help. She estimated it took 20 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

Guzenko, who hails from Ukraine and still has relatives in the war-torn country, said she never expected to be shot in an apparently peaceful American city thousands of miles away from Russian guns and artillery shells.

Guzenko, a native of Ukraine, said her family who lived in a real war zone called to ask if she was okay after being shot.

“My family there contacts me to make sure I’m okay, when they’re the ones in a war zone.” she said.

A day after Guzenko’s death, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler declared a gun violence emergency and set a target of reducing the number of shootings and gun-related deaths in the city by 10% over the next two years. Reduce.

According to data from the Portland Police Department, there were 673 shootings in the city of 650,000 in the first six months of 2022, compared to the same period in 2019 when there were 199 shootings, an increase of nearly 240%.

During Wednesday’s meeting, Guzenko, who appeared via videoconference with scars still visible on her nose, called on Portland’s mayor and elected officials to do more to curb gun violence.

“Mayor, since you have called us a gun violence emergency, I feel very little is being done.” Guzenko told Wheeler

The mayor replied that he didn’t want to “bully” people by making excessive promises, and that the target of a 10% reduction in gun violence was the “lower limit.” He also noted that he was working on adding 300 officers to the police force to keep the city safe.
