With Wednesdaywhich debuts on Netflix this Wednesday, creators Al Gough and Miles Millar (Kleinville) bring their unique take on the beloved Gothic character.
The story follows the murderous teenager while enrolled at the strange Nevermore Academy, where she tries to solve a supernatural mystery involving her parents and stop a monstrous rampage that is ravaging the nearby town.
Jenna Ortega (Jane the maiden, Scream) leads the eight-episode freshman season on Wednesday, serving up morbid one-liners with a perfectly dead delivery.
“She had an intensity and she had an intelligence,” Gough tells TVLine of Ortega’s casting. “She felt like an old soul, which Wednesday really is. Her approach was really specific. She really worked on her posture, she really worked on not blinking, she really worked on how she would deliver the lines. She’s 95 percent of the show and we’re shooting in Romania for eight months, so it’s a role you really fill and I think she did that.”
The show features several familiar faces, including Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia; Luis Guzman as Gomez; and Christina Ricci, who previously portrayed Wednesday in the 1991 film The Addams family as well as its sequel Values of the Addams Family. in the WednesdayRicci plays Marilyn Thornhill, an original character created for the show.
“We weren’t sure if we could do it because Christina was shooting Yellow jackets and she was pregnant,” Gough shares. “We had to change the schedule because she really wanted it. She worked with Tim [Burton] on Sleepy Cave, and she loves Wednesday and really loved the idea of the project. It was really important to us that we honor the legacy of what happened before.”
Gough and Millar did something similar on the WB series Kleinville, which brings seminal live-action Superman Christopher Reeve to appear in Season 2 alongside Tom Welling – who played a younger version of the character. “It’s a big thing for viewers who know the originals to have that sense of nostalgia,” Gough notes, “and pass the torch on to the next generation. It was really important for us.”
Wednesday and Kleinville could be viewed as entirely different projects, but Millar noted some parallels between them. “In a way, it’s similar because you’re telling a chapter in a character’s life that hasn’t been told before, and you’re trying to humanize a character that hasn’t really been treated that way before,” he explains.
Superman has “always been impenetrable, and he’s always like the Boy Scout. Nobody cares about Superman,” adds Millar. “I think Wednesday Addams is the same. She was always the snappy little girl in the Addams Family who always had the zingers by the end of the scene. But nobody ever worried about Wednesday. For us it was: Who is this character? And more importantly, how do you tell the story about them? How do you get her to be emotional but you also don’t want to give Wednesday away? Wednesday is very much what she is.”
