Microsoft has announced that it is “phasing out” the Windows Information Protection data leakage protection offering built into its client operating system.

“Certain functionality within the solution, known as Windows Information Protection (WIP), previously known as Enterprise Data Protection (EDP), will be phased out over time,” begins a post by Rafal Sosnowski, a program manager on the Windows Core Data Protection team.

Sosnowski said the decision made sense because during the sale of WIP, Microsoft developed Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention (DLP) and “deeply integrated with Microsoft Purview Information Protection to help your organization discover, classify, and protect sensitive information.” , while they are being used or shared.”

Purview is a superset of WIP and works across endpoints, Microsoft cloud services, and third-party SaaS offerings. Poor old WIP looks meek by comparison.

Microsoft has therefore decided that WIP is no longer a work in progress.

Or as Sosnowski put it: “To support your multi-cloud, multi-platform data protection journey and simplify your decision-making process, we are announcing today that Windows Information Protection (WIP) will no longer be actively developed and will be retired in future versions of Windows.” ul class=”listinks”>

“The sunset process follows the standard lifecycle of Windows client features,” which lists WIP as “no longer in active development and may be removed in future versions of a product or online service.”

WIP is likely included in Windows 11 version 22H2 as this version is deep in development and could also appear in several subsequent Windows updates. But the message is clear: WIP is on the way out.

Its departure will mean additional costs and complexity as Purview has a complex consumption-based pricing structure.

Microsoft generally insists that users get more value from SaaS because it can be updated more frequently, doesn’t require on-site maintenance or hands-on management, and… and well, the cloud is just really good, okay?

Even if cloud means replacing a feature in Windows with a service, there’s added cost and complexity. ®
