Testimony from a White House security official who had access to what Secret Service agents in the Capitol protecting Vice President Mike Pence were saying to each other over their radios revealed how agents feared for their lives as protesters approached. The commission refused to identify the official and masked the official’s voice.

“There was a lot of shouting,” the official told the commission. “A lot of very personal phone calls over the radio, so it was disturbing. I don’t like to talk about it, but there were phone calls to say goodbye to relatives and so on and so forth. It kept getting – for whatever reason, the VP detail thought this was about to get really ugly.”

The official said Secret Service agents were “out of options and they’re getting nervous” and that sounded like “we were getting very close to a service that had to use deadly options or worse.”
