A devastated father fought an Albanian police commissioner on the beach after the officer reportedly crashed his boat into his 7-year-old British daughter, killing her.
The girl, Jonada Avdia, a British citizen, was killed while playing in the ocean on Tuesday when she was struck by a speedboat propeller off Potam Beach in Albania. According to reports, the boat was driven by Officer Arjan Tase while off duty.
When Tase parked his boat on the shore immediately after the fatal crash, her father Bedlar Avdia confronted his daughter’s alleged murderer and a brawl ensued, the Daily Mail reports.
The agent allegedly drove the vessel into waters intended exclusively for swimmers.
“I was bathing near the coast with my daughter, I saw a white boat with two people on board,” Avdia, an Albanian resident, reportedly told local news channels.
He said the boat was briefly parked on the shore where a woman got out and more women and children boarded before heading for him and his daughter.
“It came towards us and came at an infernal speed and separated me and the girl,” he said
“I dove underwater and the craft hit my daughter with the engine part and cut her all over.”
Tase, the chief of police in the city of Elbasan, was later arrested and is due to appear in court in the city of Vlora on Friday.
Investigators claim the officer was transporting members of his family from Porto Palermo to Potam – a distance of about 8 miles – when the crash occurred.
Law enforcement officials said Tase plowed through an area clearly designated for swimmers with marked buoys to drop off family members before driving away and hitting young Jonada just 5 feet from the shoreline.
The boat’s propeller blades “caused serious injuries leading to immediate loss of life,” a police spokesman told local outlets.
Tase has been charged with “negligent manslaughter” and 15 police officers charged with guarding the beach that day have been fired, the Daily Mail reports.
The incident sparked protests in the capital Tirana, where protesters demanded the resignation of Interior Minister Bledar Çuçi, Director-General of State Police Gledis Nanos and Tourism Minister Mirela Kumbaro, according to the Albania Daily.
Kumbaro told Albania Daily she blames Tase for the tragedy and called for a maximum sentence in his case.
“There is no longer an angel among us because of the stupidity of a man who has broken every law, every rule and every norm with tragically irreversible consequences,” she said.
“Aware that there are no words to comfort the parents, the family for the tragedy they have suffered, the request goes to the courts to do its job, without compromise, with maximum punishment for anyone who violates the law. breaking the law.”
The head of the Albanian Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, claimed the boat had previously been used for drug trafficking.
