A massive police operation on Thursday in Laval and the lower Laurentians and involving 150 officers resulted in eight arrests and the seizure of firearms and drugs, Laval police announced on Friday.
The suspects, seven men between the ages of 26 and 77 and a 71-year-old woman, were released pending their court appearances to face charges of drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession.
Search warrants were executed on nine residences and six vehicles. Police seized an unspecified quantity of firearms and ammunition as well as cocaine, cannabis, hashish and methamphetamine.
Laval police were assisted in the operation by officers from the RCMP, the Sûreté du Québec and the police forces of Montreal, Longueuil, Deux-Montagnes and St-Jérôme.
Thursday’s raids were the result of an investigation launched in August aimed at reducing gun violence in the city. They were carried out less than two weeks after a shooting incident police said was related to gang violence that forced the lockdown of Collège Montmorency.
