A North Carolina school district has taken a controversial step to increase security following recent school shootings across the country.

On Friday, Madison County Schools in western North Carolina announced they would work with the county sheriff’s office to equip every building in the district with an AR-15 assault rifle, the state said Asheville Citizen Times. The move comes in response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in May, in which a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers.

After the tragedy, a nationwide conversation about gun violence and safety erupted again, with some calling for stricter gun laws and others pushing for stricter school safety. Madison County Sheriff Buddy Harwood said the decision was made to help his deputies be ready to take action in the event of an active shooter situation in the district.

“These officers were in this building for so long, and this suspect was able to infiltrate this building and injure and kill so many children,” the sheriff told the newspaper. “I just want to make sure my MPs are prepared for whatever happens.”

In addition to the firearms, Harwood said every school building in the district has been outfitted with a safe to store extra ammunition for the guns. The safes will also be stocked with ‘breaking tools’ which could be used in the event a gunman has barricaded himself in a classroom, as happened in Uvalde.

“The reason we put the burglary tools in the safes is so if someone barricades themselves in a door, we don’t have to wait for the fire department to get there,” Harwood said. “We will have these tools to be able to breach this door if necessary. I don’t want to have to run back to the car to get an AR because that’s wasted time. Hopefully we never need him, but “I want my boys to be as prepared as possible.”

Madison County Schools currently has six campuses: Brush Creek Elementary, Hot Springs Elementary, Mars Hill Elementary, Madison Middle School, Madison High School, and Madison Early College High.

The school district’s decision receives backlash

Gun safety experts and attorneys have denounced the decision in Madison County. Allison Anderman, senior counsel and director of local policy at the Giffords Law Center for Gun Violence Prevention, described the move as a response to mass shootings in a statement United States today.

“Where there are more guns, there is more gun violence,” she said.

Also in a tweet, Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, a gun safety advocacy group, criticized the move, echoing Anderman’s view that more guns are not the solution.

“What problem are these North Carolina sheriffs solving?” Watts wrote. “The hundreds of officers in Uvalde had access to AR-15s but chose not to attack a gunman with an assault rifle and a death wish. ‘MORE GUNS’ is not a solution – keeping guns away from children/teens is.”
